Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatment reduces redness and flushing, broken vessels, spider veins and more.
IPL uses repeat pulses of strong, focused light emitted from the handpiece that I move across your face or body to treat a variety of concerns. As the IPL passes over the skin it targets haemoglobin (the red colour in blood vessels) so it is fantastic for reducing uneven redness and general flushing, as well as treating individual lesions such as broken vessels and spider veins. It can also target excess melanin, which is found in freckles, sunspots and sun damage.
IPL stimulates collagen production in your skin, so following a series of treatments your skin will feel softer and more youthful in appearance.
In addition to being used by the NHS as a preferred supplier, Lynton have won multiple awards for their proven safety and demonstrated clinical results. Their IPL system is also much more effective than home-use devices you may see for sale in shops.
I also offer the luxury option of IllumiFacial® - a combination of Lynton peel, IPL and moisturising skin rejuvenation treatments.
“I use equipment by Lynton, an NHS preferred supplier. Designed and made in Great Britain but used in award-winning aesthetic clinics around the world.”

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) FAQs
-
IPL can help with lots of different things – reducing acne, acne scarring, rosacea, thread veins, pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. It also rejuvenates your skin at the same time.
-
The time to see results depends on what you are having treated:
Skin rejuvenation – as the treatment stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, results start to be seen after a few weeks, but full results take 3-6 months after the initial treatment.
Acne – you should begin to see an improvement after your first couple of treatments, but you typically see significant improvement after around 6 treatments.
Pigmentation – Immediately after the first treatment, you will see some pigmentation darken, which is the start of the treatment working. After around 2-3 weeks the darkened pigmentation will start to flake off. Over a course of treatments each layer of pigmentation will be addressed as it comes to the surface of your skin to replace the layer that has been removed.
Thread veins and rosacea - IPL can remove some very small thread veins instantaneously, while others take 2-3 weeks to disappear.
-
Yes, we will have a test patch consultation where you will always have an opportunity to chat about the treatment. We use the consultation session to talk about the best treatment for you in detail, and check that you are suitable for it, but we can always discuss any aspect of the treatment any time you come into the clinic.
-
Treatment costs depend on the type of treatment you have, the area to be treated, and whether you book a single treatment or a course of treatments.
During your initial consultation we will discuss what you want to achieve, what options are available to you, and what you can expect. I will help you select the treatment that helps you achieve those goals at the best possible value.
I offer discounts for courses of treatments, and you can book the treatments whenever you like within a year of purchasing the course.
-
The length of time for a treatment depends on the type of treatment you have and the area you are having the treatment on. For IPL this can be from 15 minutes to over an hour.
-
As IPL produces a focused light that is absorbed and becomes heat energy, it does result in a mild discomfort for most people. It has been described as having a similar sensation to a rubber band snap, which is how it felt for me too when I had the treatment.
-
Yes, test patches are used to determine the best treatment settings and to judge how your skin might react to a full treatment. A test patch is a small trial and allows me to assess how well the light energy is being absorbed and whether the skin is responding as would be expected.
-
No. As IPL skin treatment produces only a mild discomfort anaesthetic is not necessary.
-
Make-up can be applied after several hours if the skin is not sore or broken. However, I advise caution if the area is feeling sensitive. If you do put on make-up, remove it carefully as rubbing the skin can cause irritation or infection. If the skin at the treatment area becomes broken, then make-up should be avoided.
-
You should avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours post treatment.
-
Avoid strenuous activities, hot baths/showers, sauna, steam, massage and anything that could irritate the skin until any redness subsides.
Use a high SPF during your treatment course and protect the skin from direct sunlight for at least a month after treatment ends to protect against hyperpigmentation.
-
Lynton are a UK company that originates from work conducted at the University of Manchester. Their medical-grade equipment is multi award-winning and they are the only IPL supplier to the NHS. Their IPL technology is fully customisable, ensuring fantastic treatment results.
-
Before treatment, I perform a small patch test to check that you do not have adverse reactions to the treatment.
You would need to avoid waxing, plucking, hair removal creams and bleaching for at least 7 days before treatment.
Immediately after treatment, your skin may be red and slightly swollen, but this will subside very quickly. You may experience a superficial tingling feeling on the skin and you may see a darkening of pigment spots before they flake away - this means the treatment has worked perfectly in providing you with a more even, flawless skin tone.
You should use SPF 50 sun cream between treatments and for a month after your last treatment as your skin will be more sensitive at this time.
As well as clearer, healthier skin, you will also experience an ongoing improvement in the firmness and plumpness of your skin in the months following treatment, as new collagen is stimulated deep within the skin tissue.
-
Although I check people’s medical history and conditions carefully during our consultation before any treatments, generally IPL is not suitable if:
You have had prolonged sun exposure or used a tanning bed in the month before treatment
You have ever used tanning supplements
You have very large lesions or skin markings on the area being treated
You have tattoos on the area being treated.
If you are unsuitable for IPL, please get in touch so we can discuss your goals and I can recommend alternative treatments.
